Tom Roush - Even after working in the dba trenches for over 12 years, Tom has retained the ability to make complex database administration issues easy to understand by mere humans. Tom has successfully explained database processes to friends, colleagues, and peers in ways that make the complicated simple without talking down to them, and with out dumbing it down. He was even able to explain a database process to his mom using her silverware drawer, and explained parts of a complex deployment process using a stove, with pots and pans. Others were explained using a janitor's key ring, and to even his surprise and others’ amusement, he was able to explain one process using a college frat house. Tom has spent a lot of time working with and learning from some very talented individuals, and understands that no one can know everything, and that everyone has to start somewhere. That means that there are people out there who really, truly, don't know what they're doing (yet). Tom's talks are meant for these people. His talks use non technical illustrations to explain technical subjects, and do so with a touch of humor. Just as some very talented people reached back to help Tom learn and grow in his career, Tom feels that being able to explain complex things in ways people can understand is his way of reaching back to help them grow in their careers as well.
Our post-conference survey revealed that 86% said they gained knowledge they could use immediately, and 85% said they would recommend the SSWUG.org SQL Server Virtual Conference in the future.
