Bridging the Gap with Business Data Objects

Ron  Huizenga

When data modeling first evolved as a discipline, the primary focus was to specify the definition and format of data, enabling the development of information systems. The intent has always been to represent real world objects, with higher levels of abstraction. As corporate environments have become very complex, consisting of many disparate systems, data architecture has shifted to provide integration between and across those systems, as well as a foundation for data warehouses, business intelligence and analytics.
Many organizations have embraced initiatives such as service oriented architecture (SOA) to address these issues, resulting in a proliferation of additional terms and concepts including canonical models, messages, data services and business services.
This session will discuss the concept of Business Data Objects (BDOs), and how they can:
•             Add clarity as a logical and physical modeling construct, through to physical implementation in architectural frameworks
•             Serve as a common basis to simplify and facilitate discussion of real world concepts with business stakeholders
•             Represent underlying concepts consistently across modelers and developers utilizing objects, DBAs working with tables and constraints, and data modelers using entities and relationships

Sleep Well Recipe: One Dash of Transactions with a Dash of Analytics

Jennifer  Chen

dashDB is IBM’s data warehousing and analytics solution in the cloud. It allows for rapid deployment of large scale data warehouses. It provides flexible options for both volume and processing speed, and provides a unified architecture that enables hybrid data processing between on-premises and cloud deployments. This session will discuss how a well-thought-out cloud strategy allows one to focus on the business, not the infrastructure. We will talk about the various deployment methods and the hybrid approach to leverage cloud offerings in a modernized data warehouse environment. We will take a closer look at IBM dashDB and the landscape of IBM Cloud Data Services today.

"Compose" a Song that Makes IT Cool Again

Bob  Harbus

As application developers strive to become more agile and move to the cloud they are increasingly choosing open source databases to leverage proven cloud-scale solutions and dynamic ecosystems. You’ve likely come to realize that no single database will meet your needs so you are adopting a multi-database strategy in a fit-for-purpose manner. This shift presents serious challenges as you and your business struggle to support new data technologies and move rapidly from experimentation to production, and handle scale headaches, all while reducing costs and managing risk.
IBM Compose Enterprise addresses these challenges by delivering an IBM-managed cloud data platform on SoftLayer or AWS that enables companies to run MongoDB, Redis, ElasticSearch, PostgreSQLRethinkDB, RabbitMQ, and etcd in a dedicated environment.
Key benefits include

•One-click deployment of production-ready databases with HA clustering and failover, auto scaling, automated daily backups and an intuitive web interface
•The freedom to deploy any combination of the supported databases in a single managed environment
•Rapid time-to-value. Developers can focus on delivering innovative applications rather than database administration and operations

Performance Comparison of SQL Server 2016 Columnstore indexes for Real-Time Operational Analytics

Rick  Roberts

SQL Server 2016 has introduced Columnstore indexes that can be used for Real-Time operational analytics. This is the first time Columnstore indexes will be available for OLTP databases alongside In-Memory optimized tables. This presentation will first compare and contrast the use of SQL Server 2016 Columnstore indexes for Real-Time Operational Analytics with In-Memory Optimized Tables. A performance comparison will then be performed between the two types of in-memory index structures in Azure. The performance comparison will show when it is best to use each type of in-memory index structure.

Azure AD Authentication for SQL DB – Overview

Mirek  Sztajno

Consider implementing and using a new Azure SQL DB authentication method allowing Azure Active Directory (AD) to be your Cloud Central Identity Management System (CCIMS). In such case user’s and group’s identities are centrally managed by Azure AD supporting different authentication methods such as Windows authentication for Azure SQL DB. In addition, token based access method managed by Azure AD allows applications to authenticate with SQL DB using local certificates, an alternative mechanism to connect to a database without specifying user and password.

The Data Warehouse of the Future

Stan  Geiger

So you think you have the ultimate Data Warehouse...well think again. The landscape or should I say the data lake is changing constantly. We are getting data from all over the place. How do we make it available and relevant for the consumers of a data warehouse. Is Kimbell obsolete now, what about unstructured data, how about the gazillioin rows of click data, etc. So the data and BI architects are all on suicide watch. Well its not really that bad. Microsoft has woken up and seen all that is going and has brought functionality to SQL Server to solve some of these issues. This presentation provides an overview of technologies such as Polybase, Temoporal Tables, Columnstore Index, In memory tables, JSON support, etc. that can be utilized to build the data warehouse of the future.

Governing the Information Landscape in a Cloudy BigData World

Vicki  Liu

Today many companies are investing in Data Lakes using Hadoop as the underlying infrastructure. But are they really creating Data Lakes or are they creating Data Swamps? If you are not sure of the origin or purity of the data, and if users cannot find the data they need, or have no idea what data is available, what it is being used for, and whether or not it is protected and safe to use, without the risk of revealing sensitive information, then you are actually building a Data Swamp and not a Data Lake. This session covers the challenges companies face in an every changing and growing big data economy and provides an overview of the benefits and capabilities of the Data Movement, Master Data Management and Data Governance solutions that address these challenges. IBM's Information Integration and Governance is focused on agility and simplifying the portfolio for faster deployments, on-premise or in the Cloud, and known for its ability to scale and perform to meet the most complex demands and provides the broadest and deepest information integration and governance platform on the market. The platform is designed to make information more trustworthy and secure and to meet the demands of big data. With IBM, you partner with a vendor that is low risk, understands your industry and has proven success with clients all over the world.

Managing SQL Server Encryption Keys using Azure Key Vault

Rebecca  Zhang

Protect your data and encryption keys by deciding who has access and when they have access. Azure Key Vault provides HSM-backed, centralized key management in the cloud for keys you can use across your Azure services. Now SQL Server can also use Azure Key Vault via the SQL Server Connector for managing encryption keys. For those using SQL Server-in-a-VM especially, this allows you to quickly deploy SQL Server or preserve your existing SQL Server application while leveraging Azure Key Vault. In this screencast, we’ll walk through how to configure SQL Server to manage your Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) keys in Azure Key Vault. Please note this is only available for Enterprise editions.

What is the SSIS Catalog? and Why do I care?

Stan  Geiger

SQL Server 2012 redefined how SSIS packages are stored and executed. The advent of the SSISDB catalog gives a central point for working with SSIS projects deployed to the server. From this catalog we can set project and package parameter, configure environments, and monitor execution. There is no need to build in package logging because Microsoft had done it for us. This presentation covers what is in the catalog, how to deploy packages, environment, tips and tricks as well as monitoring package execution.

Introduction to SQL 2016 Temporal Tables

Vicky  Harp

SQL Server 2016 introduces the concept of temporal tables, also called system-versioned tables. This new feature allows SQL Server to automatically keep track of the history of rows in any table for which it is enabled. In this session we'll cover the basics on how to create and work with temporal tables, including the new FOR SYSTEM_TIME query clause, and we'll discuss some of the ways that they may or may not fill a need in your environment.

Investigating Sql Server Database Backup Options In Azure

Andy  McDermid

Database backups and restores are a fundamental (and critical) skill-set of any MS SQL Server DBA. A solid backup plan is a requirement for most on-premise instances and things are no different in the cloud. However, SQL Server database backups in Azure, in either an IaaS or PaaS implementation, introduce several distinct features which may help optimize a backup plan. Of course, there are also a few drawbacks to consider and work around. This presentation will focus on the options and cautions around MS SQL database backups and restores in Azure and touch on a few related topics, like Azure Storage, along the way.Go ahead and get started.

Threat Detection for Azure SQL Database

Ron  Matchoro

SQL Database Threat Detection provides a new layer of security , allowing customers to detect and response to potential threats to the database as they occur.
SQL Database Threat Detection provides a proprietary set of algorithms that work around the clock to learn, profile and detect suspicious databases activities, indicating unusual attempts to access, breach or exploit data in the database . Users can immediately investigate and mitigate the threats using Azure portal. For example, SQL Threat Database Detection detects suspicious database activities indicating a potential SQL injection or unusual access to the database from a new location, which are common security issues on the Internet.

Instrumentation With Splunk

John  Kennan

Splunk is probably best known along with other Security, Information, and Event Monitoring software for its use in intrusion detection, W/Lan traffic monitoring, and more. But unlike other software systems which rely on modules and add-ons, Splunk offers a robust real-time big data collection and reporting framework complete with its own Search Processing Languages and ready to use point and click reporting tools. This makes Splunk the perfect tool for every Oracle Applications DBA and Manager to have in their shop. If monitoring your Oracle Applications/EBS Systems is taking up too many cycles or you’re tired of getting caught off guard with what could have been preventable system outages, take some time to attend this webinar where Datavail will illustrate 2 ways Splunk can be used to mine your KPI data. The first example will be how to use Splunk to monitor JVM logs in real-time on custom Oracle BI Application. The second will show how to use inputs from scheduled scripted inputs to collect a capacity management report for RMAN database backups.

Database Benchmarking: Miseries, Myths and Misconceptions

Bert  Scalzo

Database benchmarking is a task that many DBA's only perform on rare occasion - such as before adopting a new hardware and/or software platform. Yet the DBA is often asked to provide an expert opinion on the relative chance for success based upon performing database benchmarks. Yet most database benchmarking projects fail totally or provide less than accurate predictions often resulting in huge surprises. The basic or root cause is almost universally due to common myths and misconceptions. In this session Oracle ACE Bert Scalzo will prepare you to perform both repeatable and reliable database benchmarks - and how to avoid the most common problems and their associated misery.
